Chiropractic Care for
Vertigo and Dizziness
Vertigo – the unsettling sensation that you or the room is spinning when it isn’t – can be disorienting and genuinely frightening. Dizziness and balance problems can make everyday tasks feel unsafe. While vertigo has several possible causes, some types of vertigo are closely linked to the neck and inner ear which is where chiropractic care can play a helpful role.
At Refined Chiropractic, we carefully assess what’s going on so we can help in the right way.
Understanding the different causes
Cervicogenic dizziness: dizziness stemming from problems in the upper neck (the cervical spine). When the neck’s joints and muscles aren’t working well, they can send confusing signals to the brain about where your head and body are in space.
Migraines: As if migraines aren’t bad enough, dizziness can be associated to a migraine episode and can be accompanied by sensitivity to light & noise.
Inner Ear Problems
- BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo): brief spinning triggered by head-position changes, caused by tiny crystals shifting in the inner ear.
- Viral Infection: Also known as vestibular neuritis, this is where there is an infection affecting the main nerve that leads from the inner ear to the brain.
- Meniere’s Disease: Rare but is due to a build up of fluid in the inner ear.
Other causes may include:
- Certain medication side effects
- Dehydration
- Low blood sugar
Safety First
Because dizziness can signal something that needs medical attention, it’s important to have it properly checked. We always recommend seeing your GP to rule out other causes, and we’re happy to work alongside your medical team. If symptoms are sudden, severe, or come with slurred speech or weakness, seek urgent care.
How we can help
If your dizziness is coming form the inner ear (BPPV) or linked to the neck, we can help. Our care focuses on restoring normal movement and easing tension in the upper cervical spine and in the case of BPPV special exercises in and out of the office to shift those crystals where they no longer aggravate and cause dizzy episodes. After a thorough assessment, your plan may include gentle adjustments, soft tissue work, and specific balance or movement exercises to help your body recalibrate.
